1st Louisiana Native Guards C. S. A. 1--100

1st Native Guards, Louisiana Militia C.S. A. was often thought of to have went over to Union side en masse and is simply not true. SHAPE has researched the roster totaling, 914 men, of the 1st Louisiana as presented by the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors system and we have came up with a total number of 108 men who switched sides.

Of these 108 men most went to the 6th or 7th Louisiana USCT. These units as described by the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWS&S) were 60 day units organized for duty in the City of New Orleans. Of these 108 men who changed sides only 21 served in another unit other than the 6th or 7th Louisiana , USCT. It appears that some of these man may have served in other Confederate units as like names, as noted on our pages, are found in other CSA units, of these men we did not take a count.

Due to misspelling of both Confederate and Union clerks, and the duplication of names in both armies, we believe this count is as accurate as can be expected.

If you disagree with our research, please let us know reasons and your research results so that we may investigate your results ourselves. Should we be proven wrong, we will post notes to reflect our errors.
