Agreement of Gov. Henry W. Allen and Johnson Montgomery 8 August 1864 ************************ This agreement between Henry W. Allen Governor of the State of Louisiana and Johnson Montgomery the duly authorized agent of James M. Gillispie of the Parish of Texas, made this 8th day of August A. D. 1864, witnessed????? 1. That Johnson Montgomery agent of James M. Gillispie hereby hires to the said Governor of La. sixty negroes now in Rusk County, Texas belonging top the said Gillispie to work at spinning or other labor for the State of La. for the term of the existing war or for a less term at the option of the said Gov. Allen. 2. That the said Gov. Allen will cloth and subsist the said sixty negroes and pay in addition an equitable sum for their services to be hereafter agreed upon with their owner the above named Gillispie. Given under our hand and seal this date above written at the city of Shreveport.
