Served in Co.K,13th.Virginia Infantry as a Body Servant to Pvt.Issac Brady. Later transferring to the 11th.Virginia Cavalry.
Both were captured August 1st.1864 at the Battle of Folck's Mill (Cumberland, Md.) Private Brady was sent to Camp Chase Prisoner of War Camp, Alfred was offered his freedom, but refused to take the Oath of Allegiance or to remain with the Federals.
Private Brady's father, Samuel D. Brady, who lived near Cumberland, signed Alfred's bond of 6,000 Dollars, on condition that he would not cross the river, back into Virginia during the war. Alfred Whiting, attended every Confederate Reunion within reach, as well as funerals of veterans, and selected his own pallbearers from among his former comrades.
