I've never found any documented proof of Bony Smith. I can't recall where, but I've read that Bony got his nickname by being "long and lanky". A Union soldier from I believe Connecticut, is supposed to have mentioned a "very tall Black Man" at the wall with a Confederate flag in his remembrances of the battle.
