In Baton Rouge, Captain H. B. Favrot began a muster of free colored men, and by April 25, 1861, he had enlisted some thirty Negro recruits. A group of free Negroes of Pointe Coupee Parish formed a military company for service with the state or the Confederacy. In April, 1861, the free Negroes of New Orleans began to organize colored military companies and battalions, sanctioned by the state government. These troops soon were taking part in military reviews in the city. By early 1862 there were more than 3,000 members of colored military organizations. This is a surprisingly large number, as the entire free colored population of the state in 1860 was only 18,547, nearly 11,000 of whom lived in New Orleans.
